James Ryan’s career in criminal law is built on a foundation of rigorous education, hands-on law enforcement experience, and dedicated advocacy. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from California State University, Sacramento, graduating magna cum laude. James began his professional journey with the California Highway Patrol as a Cadet, where his early exposure to law enforcement shaped his understanding of the justice system and inspired his transition into legal practice.

James has served as a Certified Law Clerk at the Office of the Federal Defender for the Eastern District of California, managing multiple cases from assignment through resolution. In this role, he represented clients in both federal and state misdemeanor matters, guiding cases from arraignment to sentencing. His work encompassed legal research, motion drafting, and delivering oral arguments in court, providing him with a comprehensive view of criminal defense at all levels.

He further honed his skills at the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office, where he contributed to high-stakes felony and death penalty cases as a Legal Intern in the Research Unit, gaining invaluable experience in complex legal analysis and courtroom strategy.

James Ryan earned his Juris Doctor from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, where he distinguished himself as a National Quarterfinalist in the Judge John R. Brown Admiralty Moot Court Competition.

Renowned among his peers as a “wolf in a velvet glove” in the courtroom, James combines fearless advocacy with a calm, measured demeanor. He communicates effectively with both clients and prosecutors, taking a personalized approach to every case. Beyond his legal practice, James serves his community as a pastoral care minister and enjoys sailing, shooting sports, and weightlifting, reflecting a dedication to balance, discipline, and service both in and out of the courtroom. James lives with his wife and two children.
